Course Title:                          Firearms Instructor

Pre-Qualification will be done on April 6, 2026 @ 0800 

Course Description:

This is the instructor course required for state certification as a firearms instructor.  Students must demonstrate a mastery of all aspects of day and night range operations and proficiency in the use of semi‑automatic pistols, revolvers, and shotguns.    Students are required to pass a comprehensive written examination with a score of 70% or greater, and pass firearms related practical exercises.

Prerequisites:             

Students enrolled in this course should have a general instructor certification.

Students must qualify on the Entry Level Modified Double Action course with a score of 90% or greater.  Students should bring 120 rounds of service handgun ammunition.  All students must report to the Botetourt County Range (259 Landfill Road, Troutville Va.) on April 6, 2026 @0800 and will have two opportunities to obtain a qualifying score.  Students that fail to qualify will not be admitted to the course.

Other Requirements:

All Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy member agency personnel must complete a 48 hour internship in an entry level class prior to receiving their firearms instructor certification.

Ammunition Requirements - (provided by agency in addition to pre-qualification ammo):

1500 rounds of service handgun ammunition

15 rounds of 12 gauge 00 buckshot ‑ 9 pellet

15 rounds of 12 gauge 2: in. rifle slugs

Fee:     No fee for member agencies

             (Non-member agency personnel will be admitted on a seats available basis.)

$625.00 per officer for non-member agency personnel

In-service Credit:      40 hours (4 legal/36 career development)

Class Size:      Maximum 16 students
